Chemical / flocculating water treatment

When water needs to be cleaned fast and robustly, chemical treatment gathers the pollution. Coagulant and flocculant bind fine particles, oil and suspended solids into larger flocs that are easily settled, floated or filtered out.

The principle

What are coagulation and flocculation?

Many pollutants are so small that they float in the water and never settle on their own. Coagulation adds an agent (e.g. an iron or aluminium salt) that neutralises the particles' charge so they can clump together. Flocculation adds a polymer that binds the small clumps into large, visible flocs. The flocs are then separated by settling, flotation or filtration — leaving clear water.

Robust to fluctuations

Handles variable load and changing water quality better than biology alone — good as pre-treatment.

Removes what biology can't

Heavy metals, phosphorus, colour and inorganic particles are removed effectively — often beyond biology's reach.

pH adjustment

The water's pH is brought into the right window so the coagulant works optimally.
