When water needs to be cleaned fast and robustly, chemical treatment gathers the pollution. Coagulant and flocculant bind fine particles, oil and suspended solids into larger flocs that are easily settled, floated or filtered out.
Many pollutants are so small that they float in the water and never settle on their own. Coagulation adds an agent (e.g. an iron or aluminium salt) that neutralises the particles' charge so they can clump together. Flocculation adds a polymer that binds the small clumps into large, visible flocs. The flocs are then separated by settling, flotation or filtration — leaving clear water.
Flocculation works in minutes — ideal when a lot of material must be removed quickly.
Handles variable load and changing water quality better than biology alone — good as pre-treatment.
Heavy metals, phosphorus, colour and inorganic particles are removed effectively — often beyond biology's reach.
From invisible particles to visible sludge — in four steps.
The water's pH is brought into the right window so the coagulant works optimally.
The coagulant neutralises the particles' charge under rapid mixing so they begin to gather.
A polymer is added under slow mixing and binds the small clumps into large, firm flocs.
The flocs are removed by settling, flotation or filtration — and the clear water flows on.
Chemistry wins where it must be fast, robust and fully clean.
Removes large amounts of particles and oil first, so the following steps are less burdened.
Industrial washing, metalworking and surface treatment with emulsified oil and fine sludge.
Where discharge limits target metals or phosphorus, chemical treatment precipitates them effectively.
Robust to fluctuations — suited to plants with variable flow and changing water quality.
When water must be fully clean before discharge or reuse, flocculation delivers high, documentable purity.
Flocculation up front, biology in the middle and HydroFLOW® or a filter at the end — I compose the steps to match your water.
Send me a description of your water and your discharge limits, and we'll find the right combination of chemistry, biology and filtration.
